Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that the first marking period is over. Parent teacher conferences were held on the 2nd and the weeks leading up to that date. If you have not done so yet, I encourage you to schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher. Parent-teacher conferences are an opportunity to establish strong, clear communication between parents and teachers. This is an opportunity for both the parent and teacher to gain a mutual understanding around a child’s learning style. These open communications are beneficial in helping our students achieve their full potential.

Thank you to all the families who attended our Books & Jammies Family Literacy Night!! It was a great success. Please continue to foster a love for reading with your children. Studies have shown that 20 minutes of reading a day has significant long term benefits for children that include:

  • Expanded vocabulary
  • Increased brain development
  • Higher test scores
  • Broadened worldview
  • Instilling a life-long love for reading and learning

You play a vital role in helping your child enjoy reading. Plan trips to the library and help your child select books. Discuss your child’s reading interests and encourage your child to widen his or her selection of books based on author, topic, or type. Enjoy talking with your child about the books he or she selects and reads. Encourage your child to keep a journal of illustrations and/or passages about the books they read. In order for children to become fluent readers they need to practice every night. We ask that parents assist children in meeting this expectation. Help your child find a quiet and relaxing place where they can read. Encourage siblings and other family members not to interrupt them when they are reading.

After school tutoring started in October. If you received a letter inviting your child to attend, we strongly encourage you take advantage of this additional support. Please make every effort to ensure your child attends regularly.

As Thanksgiving approaches we emphasis the joy of family gatherings and are thankful for our family, friends and school community. Please join us for our annual Thanksgiving Dinner on Monday, November 19th. Doors open at 5:30 pm and dinner is served from 6:00-8:00 PM. This annual traditional is a great opportunity for all our Bergen families to get together to celebrate and enjoy a delicious meal together.

Best,

Sheila B. Goodstein
