Making Real-World Connections through the Arts

Many of the Core Curriculum Content Standards can be explored within the framework of cultural awareness and appreciation. In the arts-based curricula, students may create projects and performances based on artistic styles or time periods, and listen to, view, and perform pieces garnered from myriad cultures. Through this holistic approach, students are exposed to a world of artistic expression, increasing their global awareness of the arts, and embracing creativity as 21st-Century learners.

Visual Arts

The arts are an indispensable and fundamental part of a student’s education. Our mission for the visual arts program at iLearn is to provide interdisciplinary, multi-cultural and historically aware lessons which engage our student’s senses, talents, and individual experiences. iLearn visual art program imparts a secure environment where student’s study visual imagery, ideas, and occasions for making art in their everyday lives.

The visual art curriculum is designed to support what students are learning in their other classes. These lessons offer visual, hands-on experiences to all types of learners and are used to enrich the student’s perception of information in other subjects. Our lessons open students to the opinions of others while promoting a respect for differences, moving students beyond stereotypical ideas about individuals from different racial, ethnic, and economic groups. Our cultural art program prepares students to participate in the world around them.

Our art educators believe our students are a part of this culture and constantly seek new opportunities to involve our young artists in current art events. We believe our students are the key to keeping art alive for centuries to come. Through student-centered discussions, manipulation of materials and a variety of sensual and perceptual experiences, students will develop the skills, information, and confidence they need to participate in the larger world around them.

The culmination of the endeavors of the Visual Arts Department can be seen at the Annual Art Fairs. This event has been held both on our campuses, and this year will be displayed as a gallery walk in the Hackensack Public Library. Families have the opportunity to view their student’s framed artwork, in addition to ceramics and mixed-medium pieces. Additionally, an array of cultural art pieces can be viewed at the Annual Garden State International Heritage Festival in Secaucus. The Visual Art Program also is credited with the set design and construction for all theatrical productions.

Performing Arts

At iLearn, performing arts are experienced through exploring, practicing, and performing in a multitude of environments that suit the students’ audial, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles. It is our mission to provide students a place to discover, express, and create through aspects of performing arts, whether musical or theatrical, while encouraging intellectual and social growth.

The Performing Arts Department at iLearn believes in a strong, well-balanced education, combining both individual and group experiences, using a variety of teaching methods, allowing and encouraging students to excel and develop their skills. Students are motivated to seek further challenges to maintain the desire of discovery and expression through their experiences.

Each year, all students at the elementary and middle-school levels perform in seasonal concerts, with the Spring Concert being highlighted at the Garden State International Heritage Festival. Choir is offered on each campus, and the high school offers electives in Music Theory, Band, and Choir. Students from these groups are regularly featured performers at district-wide events. Vocal competitions are held annually on each campus; students are encouraged to develop their talents through afterschool programs that focus on music.

Additionally, each campus produces a full-length Spring Musical. Students prepare for this capstone performance throughout the year; families are involved with assisting backstage before and during the performances. Pat performances include Annie, Alice in Wonderland, Into the Woods, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Jungle Book, Cinderella, and The Wizard of Oz. This program attracts not only performing artists, but artistically gifted students who assist with set design, props, and costumes.
