G&T Professional Learning, Resources, and Complaint Policy

Professional Learning

Pursuant to the Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Act, iLearn Schools actively assists and supports professional development for teachers, educational services staff, and school leaders in the area of gifted and talented instruction. Professional development opportunities planned for each staff category are outlined below:

I. Teachers and Educational Services Staff

  • iLearn Summer Institute *2 weeks in August, prior to school opening
    • Teachers: new and returning
    • Counselors: working with and counseling G&T students
    • Special education staff: twice-exceptional identification
  • iLearn Admin Summer Institute *1 weeks in August, prior to school opening
    • Program Directors: academic departments curriculum modifications, differentiated instruction guidelines for G&T students
    • Academic Coaches: supporting classroom teachers in working with G&T students
  • Year-long District PD days
    • G&T support strategies in the classroom
    • Strategies for supporting students beyond the classroom 
    • G&T identification strategies 
  • Gifted & Talented Department Staff
    • G&T Coordinator orientation, mid-year, and end-of-year meetings
    • Program resource development activities
    • Implementation and strategies trainings
    • Annual district and national G&T conferences participation sponsored by iLearn Schools Professional Development Department

II. School Leaders 

  • iLearn Admin Summer Institute *1 weeks in August, prior to school opening
    • School directors
    • Assistant Directors of Academics and Operations

iLearn Gifted & Talented Department Director and GT Coordinators are available for year-long support and guidance to all iLearn Schools teachers, staff and school leaders.

Complaint Policy

for iLearn Schools New Jersey Campuses

According to the Strengthening Gifted and Talented Education Act. (C.18A:35-38) “An individual who believes that a school district has not complied with the provisions of this act may file a complaint with the board of education.”

Pursuant to the law, the following procedure must be followed to file a complaint alleging iLearn Schools is not in compliance with the provisions of the act.

Please note that Complaint Policy for Noncompliance is not the same as an appeal process of placement of a student. Complaint Policy deals with alleged noncompliance as defined in the Act. Complaint for noncompliance will not affect prior program placement decisions.

A complaint submitted pursuant to this section may only allege noncompliance that has occurred within one year prior to the date that the complaint is submitted.  The complaint shall include:

  1. a statement that the identified school district is not in compliance with the provisions of this act, and the specific facts on which the allegation of noncompliance is based; and
  2. the name, address, and contact information of the complainant.

A complaint with the CEO may be filed if an individual believes that a school district has not complied with the provisions of this Act. Based on the decision of the CEO to affirm, reject, or modify the the District’s action in the matter, the individual may file a petition of appeal of the written decision of the CEO in the following order utilizing the same above described format:

  • Board of Education – Based on the decision of the Board of Education to affirm, reject, or modify the district’s action in the matter, the individual may file a petition of appeal of the written decision; to
  • Executive County Superintendent – The investigation shall be completed within 60 calendar days after receipt of the complaint and issue a written decision with proposed remediation, if necessary, to the complainant and the school district. Based on the decision of the Executive County Superintendent to affirm, reject, or modify the district’s action in the matter, the individual may file a petition of appeal of the written decision; toCommissioner of Education via Office of Controversies and Disputes in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:6-9 and the procedures set forth in State Board of Education regulations. Should the District found to be in noncompliance with the Act, remediation of the Gifted and Talented Program will take place.
